Der dicke Fisch

Jamie and I took a short break near the ranch.

Jamie: “I wanted to ask you something. We’ve been a couple for over three weeks now, and I think it’s time… would you move in with me?”

Gillian: “Haha, Jamie! You’re in a hurry. We’re not even official yet. Maybe we should do that first. How about your toothbrush moves in with me instead?”

When we got back, I was about to go into the house when Jamie suddenly appeared, holding a toothbrush.

Gillian: “Jamie?! We said goodbye ten minutes ago.”

Jamie: “I know, but look — here it is already. Ever since I told it about you, it really wanted to move in. But you should know… it’s a bit shy. If it gets homesick, call me and I’ll come. Day or night.”

I couldn’t help but kiss him.

Gillian: “You’re adorable when you talk nonsense like that. You know what? Let’s do this. Let’s make it official.”

Jamie: “YES!!!”

I wanted to tell our parents first, so we started with a video call to my parents in Canada.

Gillian: “Mum, Dad — this is Jamie. He’s the kindest, most sensitive and funniest person I’ve ever met. I’m so happy. You’re going to love him.”

Gillian’s Mum: “This is wonderful news. Jamie, Gillian is the most precious thing we have. Please always treat her with respect and take good care of her.”

Jamie: “Hi Mum and Dad Meadowland. Gillian is the best thing that ever happened to me. I promise I’ll cherish, protect and make her happy.”

My parents were thrilled. Next up — Jamie’s parents.

Gillian: “Alright, your parents next, then Claire and Rowan — and then it’s official.”

Jamie: “Ugh… my dad. I already apologize for anything stupid he might say. But my mum will be so happy.”

The Springflowers were standing in the yard.

Jamie: “Mum, Dad, this is Gillian. She’s the woman I love — and the woman I’m going to marry.”

Jamie’s Mum: “Oh, that’s wonderful. Nice to meet you, Gillian.”

Gillian: “I’m so happy to meet you too.”

Jamie’s Dad: “Ah, little Meadowland. We’ve met before. Looks like you caught yourself a big fish. Come by in the next few days — we need to talk.” We found Claire and Rowan near the outdoor stables.

Gillian: “Claire, Rowan, we have something to tell you—”

Jamie: “We’re a couple! This woman is crazy about me. And now I get to tell everyone!”

Claire: “Congratulations! Who would’ve thought… haha!”

Before Claire could finish, Jamie was already running off.

Claire: “I’m so happy for you. Jamie is over the moon.”

Suddenly, a loud announcement echoed across the ranch.

Announcement: “Attention! Attention! Important announcement!”

Claire: “Gillian?! Run!!!”

Rowan: “Uh oh… Jamie…”

Too late. Jamie stood on a crate in front of the horse market, all our coworkers gathered around.

Jamie: “Dear colleagues! The lovely Gillian has finally said ‘yes’. From now on, we are officially a couple! … oh, and here she comes!”

I wanted the ground to swallow me whole — but I loved that goofball with all my heart.
